Four DAHS wrestlers headed to states

 ALTOONA - Four DuBois Area High School wrestlers will be headed to Hershey this week for the PIAA Class AAA state championships after qualifying at the Northwest Regional Tournament over the weekend.

Among the contingent headed to states is a pair of regional champs in junior Tom Sleigh and senior Landon Hanna at 170 and 195 pounds, respectively. Freshman Shea Bloom also reached the finals but finished second at 106 pounds. Also qualifying for states was senior Garrett Brown, who finished third at 138 pounds.  Just missing out on a trip to states was two fourth-place finishers in seniors Mike Kennelly and Shane Marshall at 160 and 182 pounds, respectively. The top third-place winners at each weight qualify.  As a team, DuBois finished third in the team standings behind champion Erie McDowell and General McLane with 106 points.

Sleigh, now 38-0 on the season, pretty much dominated his weight class at regionals. He opened with an 8-0 major decision over Devin Stacey of Central Mountain. He then scored a 16-0 technical fall over John Prentice of Phillipsburg-Osceola before he pinned Kyle Rogers of Erie McDowelli n 3:26. In the finals, Sleigh beat Bellefonte’s Nick Shawley, 12-5.

Hanna, now 35-1 on the season, was just as dominant at 195. After a first-round bye, he pinned Loc Long of Central Mountain in 40 seconds before scoring a 7-1 decision over Mante Barnes of Altoona in the semifinals. In the finals, Hanna made quick work of Bald Eagle Area’s Aaron Varner with apin in 17 seconds.

Bloom, who enters states at 36-5, also opened with a bye before a pair of close decisions over Charlie Lenox of Erie McDowell, 7-5, andHollidaysburg’s Damien Huff, 2-1. In the finals, he lost an 8-4 decision toGeneral McLane’s Joe Wheeling.

Brown, now 32-11, went 3-2 at regionals. He opened with winsover Phillipsburg-Osceola’s Caleb Shively, 6-3, and Perry’s Keron Jones, 3-2, before losing to Altoona’s T.J. Brandt, 4-1, in the semifinals. He bounced back with a 4-3 win over Punxsutawney’s Perry Arrington before pinning Allderdice’s Ean DiSilvio in 3:44 in the consolation finals to punch his ticket to states.

Kennelly went 4-2 at regionals. He lost an 8-0 major decision in the consolation finals to General McLane’s Ossie Bowers to finish fourth. Kennelly ended the season at 35-10.

Marshall also went 4-2 at regionals. He lost a 5-1 decision to General McLane’s Chris Laird to finish fourth.  Marshall ended the season at 35-9.

Other DAHS wrestlers who competed at regionals included senior Bryce Swauger, who went 2-2 at 113 pounds and finished the season at 28-10; junior Kody Cox, who went 0-2 at 120 and finished the season at 13-22; junior Mark Troisi, who went 0-2 at 152 and finished at 6-8; and senior Nate Petitti, who went 0-2 at 285 and finished at 5-9.

Bloom, Brown, Sleigh and Hanna begin states on Thursday at the Giant Center in Hershey. The state tournament concludes on Saturday.
