Overview of our Program

The DuBois Area School District is committed to helping every student reach success in his or her educational experiences in order to become college and career ready prior to graduation from High School.  The District's English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is individually designed for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade whose primary home language is other than English (PHLOTE).

Upon enrolling in the DuBois Area School District, each student completes a home language survey to determine eligibility for ESL services.  If a student is identified as an ELL (English Language Learner), a certified ESL instructor is assigned to the student to assist the student and his or her family in both the transition to the district and in the acquisition of curricular content.

Students entering into the ESL program are administered an entrance assessment to determine the level of English proficiency and the amount of time spent with the ESL instructor.

ESL students' progress is regularly monitored to determine the types of interventions needed for development of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English.  A yearly achievement test is administered to assess program effectiveness and student mastery of skills.

Students who show mastery of skills based on formative assessment and the results of the yearly summative assessment are exited from the ESL program.  These students are monitored for a period of two years to assure that success in school is maintained.

Questions about the ESL program should be directed to Mr. Roger Collins, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent and ESL Program Coordinator at 814-371-2700 or at
